12 Tips to Obtain a CDL

In addition, the combination vehicle test administered for a Class A commercial driver license shall consist of a minimum of twenty (20) multiple-choice questions. The minimum passing score for each written examination shall be eighty percent (80%).

Generally, to obtain a CDL, you need to follow these steps:

1. Check Requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old for intrastate driving (within your state) or 21 years old for interstate driving (across state lines).
  • Have a valid driver’s license.
  • Meet specific medical requirements.

2. Study the CDL Manual:

  • Obtain the CDL manual from your state’s DMV office or their website.
  • Study the manual thoroughly. It contains information about the written exam and the skills test.

3. CDL Learner’s Permit:

  • Obtain a learner’s permit by passing the written exams. These exams cover general knowledge, air brakes (if applicable), and any endorsements you may need (such as hazardous materials or passenger transport).

4. CDL Training (If Needed):

  • Consider enrolling in a truck driving school for professional training. These schools often provide both classroom instruction and practical training with vehicles.

5. Practice Driving:

  • Spend time practicing driving a commercial vehicle under the supervision of a licensed CDL holder.

6. CDL Skills Test:

  • Schedule and pass the skills test, which includes a pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control, and on-road driving.

7. Obtain Your CDL:

  • After passing the skills test, visit your local DMV office to obtain your CDL.

8. Consider Additional Endorsements:

  • If your career requires it, consider obtaining additional endorsements like Hazmat, Tanker, or Passenger Transport.

 9.  Endorsement or restriction examination. 

The minimum number of multiple-choice questions and the minimum passing score for each endorsement or restriction examination shall be as follows:
(A)    “P” passenger endorsement – 20 questions – 80% score
(B)    “H” hazardous materials endorsement – 30 questions – 80% score
(C)    “N” tank vehicle endorsement – 20 questions – 80% score
(D)    “M” motorcycle endorsement – 20 questions – 75% score
(E)    “S” school bus endorsement – 20 questions – 80% score
(F)    “T” double or triple trailers endorsement – 20 questions – 80% score
(G)    Air brakes – 25 questions – 80% score. Failure to pass at least 80% of the 25 questions regarding air brakes will result in a restriction code “L” (Vehicle Without Air Brakes) being placed on the applicant’s license upon issuance. The applicant shall be prohibited from taking the skills examination in a vehicle with air brakes.

10. Alternate method of examination. 

The Department may provide an alternate method for the written examination for an applicant who cannot read or has a language barrier.

11. Retesting

An applicant failing the written examination may be granted the opportunity to retest on the next regular business day.

12. Discretionary examination:

Any examination, as deemed necessary by the Department, may be administered by the Department as required for the establishment and authorization of a special endorsement or to permit the operation of commercial motor vehicles.
