1. The Background:

Having more followers and fans on TikTok means your videos have more eyes to reach. You can make the best videos on TikTok, but that won’t matter unless you have an audience. Using a few easy steps, you can increase your followers, and maybe even get 1k followers, in no time. This wikiHow article will show you tips on how to gain followers on TikTok.

2. Things You Should Know

  • Get a lot of followers with these tips: create viral videos, post quality content, add appropriate hashtags, and host contests and giveaways.
  • You also want to collaborate with other creators and promote your videos via TikTok’s Promote feature.
  • While you can purchase followers, it’s probably not worth it.
  • Increase your audience by sharing your TikTok videos across social media platforms.

There isn’t a 100% guaranteed formula for viral videos, but you can take a look at what’s trending to make a similar video.

  • Tap the magnifying glass in the top right corner to see a list of viral videos under “You may like”. The trending or viral video topics are marked with a staggered red arrow that’s pointing up.
  • After you create a video similar to the ones that you see are trending, make sure to use the right hashtags! Use the same hashtags used in those viral and trending videos to ensure that your video is seen by the same audience.

Since many TikTok users lip-sync to popular songs, an original video will stand out. But don’t make videos that are all the same, since that can get boring. A TikTok user who makes original and interesting content is more likely to gain more followers than a TikTok user who only produces unoriginal content.

  • If you’re interested in making lip-sync videos, make sure you keep it interesting. You can look at popular artists and mimic elements from them.
  • After you’ve made a video, help it succeed by adding a caption, hashtags, sound effects, and awesome transitions.
  • Once you have a few videos posted, look back and see which performed better. Which video prompted more comments or interactions from your audience? Which video was watched again and again? You can see what worked and continue making similar videos.

As long as the trend isn’t dangerous to yourself or others, you might as well post a video that joins in. For example, the ice bucket challenge earned the video creators lots of followers and tons of views.

  • However, don’t let a trend pass you by for too long! If you create a video after a trend has ended, you’ll miss out on all the peak interest and views.

Their followers are more likely to follow you as well if you collab with a popular influencer.

  • Know that popular accounts get requests to collab all the time, so your request may take a while to get to.
  • If you can’t easily collab with someone, stitch one of their videos. When you see a video that you like, tap the share arrow icon, scroll the bottom row to the right, and tap Stitch.

For example, if the video you’re posting features a duet, tag it with #duet. If your video does not feature a duet, this tag is irrelevant and will not get you any views. So make sure you’re using appropriate hashtags on your videos!

  • You have the option to add hashtags when you’re prompted to add a description to your post. Tap # Hashtags to start tagging.
  • Avoid looking spammy by adding no more than 5 hashtags to your video. More than that and your video could be considered spammy, which might lose followers.

Require anyone who wants to enter that they tag a friend, follow the account, and repost the video. That way, your account gets more eyes from different audiences that have a small chance of following your account.

  • People love free things, so it’s easy to gain followers and get your video reposted by multiple accounts if you’re offering something that is appealing to your audience.

Buying followers will get you to 1k easily in no time at all, but there are associated risks, like being shadowbanned or having your account hacked.

  • Purchased followers also do not mean that you have a larger audience because the followers you purchased most likely will not interact with your content.
  • If you just want to inflate the number of followers you have, buying is right for you. But if you want those followers as your audience, purchasing them may not help you.

And that means that you have a better chance of gaining a fair amount of followers. This method will cost you money, but if you wanted to buy followers, this is a more organic and official way.

  • To promote a video, view it after you’ve posted it, tap the share arrow, then tap Promote, which features a flame icon. From there, tap Customized promotions for other goals > More followers > Next, define your audience or let TikTok choose for you, then tap Next > Next > Pay and start promotion.

You might be missing your followers on Instagram or YouTube by not sharing your TikTok content there. Even a simple post on any other social media platform that says, “Hey guys, I posted a new TikTok video. Check it out!” will work to drive views and followers to your TikTok account.

  • Reposting a TikTok video on another platform includes your TikTok username, so your other followers can easily find you between platforms. To share your video from TikTok, tap the curved arrow on one of your videos, and select a social media platform to share it to.
  • Did you know you can see what days and times your followers are most active by looking at Follower activity in the Followers tab? Try to time your posts when your followers are most likely to see them to generate even more buzz.

12. It can be hard to stay motivated and dedicated if you’re making videos about things you don’t care for.

You should also try to make sure this content is something there’s an active audience for, although there’s most likely a niche audience for anything you’re into! Here’s some examples:

  • Dancing
  • Singing
  • Acting
  • Swimming
  • Cleaning
  • Life Hacks
  • Chef/Cooking
  • News/Crime

Unlike Facebook or Instagram, where posting too often can get on peoples’ nerves, people expect a lot of content from each creator on TikTok. If you can get your average viewer count up, you’ll be more visible to a greater number of new users.

What is something you know a lot about or can do well? Are you an avid record collector? A nurse working on a COVID-19 unit? A rapper? A mom who has nailed easy Instant Pot meals? Use the search field on the Discover page to check out what types of videos already exist for topics you know a lot about and think about how you could add value to those topics.

  • Having a focus doesn’t mean that you must only make a certain kind of video, but it does help to build a following.
  • If you run a business, try promoting what you do. For instance, if you have a hair salon, you might post before-and-after transformations!
  • You could also try focusing on what you don’t know, or things you’re comedically bad at!

TikTok is a platform that celebrates fresh and wacky ideas, so don’t hesitate to be bold and do something that hasn’t been done before.  Remember to use the same hashtags in your video as the original creator so your video is easy to find.

  • It’s fine to use another person’s video as a template for your TikTok. This isn’t usually seen as copying so much as it is perceived to be a user participating in the format.

Look at popular TikToks to see how they use hashtags in their videos, and try to hop on a trend as early as possible. Never skip this step—hashtags are crucial, especially when doing challenges.

  • Tap the Discover option at the bottom of the app to see the latest trending hashtags, sounds, and effects on TikTok. When you tap a trending hashtag, sound, or topic, you’ll see popular videos that have used those features.
  • If you can incorporate any combination of trending topics into one or more videos, you’re more likely to wind up on peoples’ For You pages.
  • While you don’t want to mirror someone’s content exactly, you can gain inspiration from TikTokers who are already popular on the platform.
  • As long as you’re using at least one or two popular hashtags, you can add some goofy or ironic ones. For example, if you’re singing a love song to your cat, you could use #TrueLove, #HeHatesMe, or #We’rePurfect, to add a funny element to your video.

Music is a massive part of TikTok and videos with popular songs can get billions of views!  Sometimes doing your cool, creative, or funny performance to a trending song is enough to make you go viral.

  • For example, #FakeTravel was a popular hashtag that used foreign-language songs and weird costumes to make it seem like the user was in a different part of the world.
  • Children’s songs like “Baby Shark” or “Castaways” from The Backyardigans are always trending and can make for some funny videos.

From Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” to the surprising time traveler, there is no shortage of memes that originated on TikTok. TikTok also makes it easy to add your take to someone else’s video by stitching or duetting your spin on someone else’s video, which is essentially how viral memes are created—a video takes off, and other TikTokers “remix” the original song or punchline to add their jokes, hot takes, lyrics, dances, or stunts.

  • Making people laugh is a great way to get views. Rather than telling straight-up jokes, most comedic TikTok creators tell funny or embarrassing anecdotes, record goofy missteps, and dig into the most hilarious aspects of day-to-day life.

Since they use the same hashtag for all videos in the challenge, they have a built-in audience! Challenges can be dances, lip-syncing, hilarious stitches, or even stunts. To make a challenge video, study a few examples and try to put your spin on the format.

  • Take your time when crafting challenge videos, since they’re more likely to be seen than your normal videos.
  • Some popular challenges are the “Waking up in the morning” challenge, “Tell me (insert topic here) without tell me you (insert topic here),” #InMyFeelingsChallenge, and #UnMakeupChallenge.

Follow popular influencers and TikTok creators. You can comment on how funny or relatable a video is, or you can crack a joke. If your comment gets a lot of likes, it will be more visible to other people checking the comments section of the video.

  • Avoid getting into public arguments in comment threads. People won’t want to click on your profile if they think you’re rude or aggressive.

Yes, your videos don’t always have to be giant productions, but setting up a video with good lighting, clean editing, and crisp audio can make a difference.  Consider things like:

  • Location: Consider filming in weird or funny locations or switching up the lighting in your room.
  • Lighting: Natural light is best, but if it’s nighttime, you’ll want to make sure people can see you. Consider investing in a good ring light if you don’t have a location bright enough to film in.
  • Volume: If people can’t hear you over the music, why would they want to see more of your videos? Listen to your video before sharing it to make sure it sounds the way you want.

22. Make an uploading schedule:

We all have lives outside of TikTok, so keeping a schedule to still live your regular life and upload to TikTok is important. If you have a team, set up schedules for them to do their jobs.

  • Write to-do list and online schedules to use.
