1. Plug your phone into a charger.
There’s a chance that your phone has run out of battery and will not turn on.
Plug your phone in and let it charge for a few minutes before trying any of the following steps.
- If you see a battery outline with a red sliver in it appear when you connect your phone to the charger, your phone’s battery was dead.
- Make sure that the charger you use is functioning properly. If the battery symbol doesn’t appear within an hour of plugging in the phone, try a different charger/outlet.

2. Close the frozen app.
If a specific app is frozen, use the following steps to force-close the app:
- On iPhone X or later, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause in the middle.
- On iPhone 8 and earlier, double-tap the home button below your screen.
- Swipe left and right to switch between apps.
- Swipe up on the screen to close an app.
3. Restart the iPhone manually.
Press and hold the Power button on your phone until the slide to power off slider appears at the top of the screen, then swipe the slider to the right to turn off your phone.
Wait for a few minutes before pressing the Power button again to turn back on your iPhone.

4. Force your phone to restart.
If your iPhone isn’t responding to your Power button or screen taps, you can force your iPhone to restart.
To do so:
- iPhone X and later: Press the volume up button, then press the volume down button. Press and hold the side button until the screen turns on and off. Release the button when the Apple logo appears.
- iPhone 8 and 8 Plus – Quickly press and release the Volume Up button, do the same for the Volume Down button, and then press and hold the Power button until you see the Apple logo appear on-screen.
- iPhone 7 and 7 Plus – Hold down the Volume Down button and the Power button at the same time until you see the Apple logo appear on-screen.
- All other iPhones – Hold down the Home button and the Power button at the same time until you see the Apple logo appear on-screen.

5. Check for an update.
If your iPhone started freezing after updating to the newest version of the operating system.
There may be an update available that addresses the freezing. To check for updates:
- Open Settings
- Tap General
- Tap Software Update
- Tap Install Now if an update is available, then follow the iPhone’s on-screen instructions.
- You can also use iTunes to update if you still can’t use your phone’s screen.

6. Delete recently installed apps.
If your iPhone recently started freezing after you installed an app or a series of apps, deleting the app(s) in question may resolve the freezing errors.
- You can view a list of app errors by opening Settings, scrolling down and tapping Privacy, scrolling down and tapping Analytics, tapping Analytics Data, and looking for an instance of an app’s name repeated multiple times here.
- Skip this step if you still can’t access your iPhone’s on-screen content.

7. Use iTunes to restore your iPhone.
If you still can’t get your iPhone to unfreeze, it’s time to restore a backup from iTunes.
You can do this by connecting your phone to a computer, opening iTunes, opening the iPhone’s page, clicking Restore iPhone, and following the on-screen instructions.
- If you don’t have a backup, you’ll instead have to restore the phone to factory settings.
- If you are using macOS Catalina, use the Finder instead of iTunes to reset your iPhone.

8. Close the frozen app.
Depending on your phone model, use the following steps to close an app that is not responding.
- Press icon with three lines, or two over lapping squares.
- If your phone doesn’t have that, swipe up from the bottom of the screen, or press the button below your screen.

- Swipe up on the app you want to kill.

9. Plug your phone into a charger.
There’s a chance that your phone has run out of battery and will not turn on.
So plug your phone into a wall charger and let it sit for a few minutes before you continue.
- If your phone gives no indication of charging after a few minutes, try a different charger and/or wall outlet.
- You’ll most likely get the best results by using the charger that came with your phone.

10. Try turning your phone off the regular way.
Press and hold the Power button on your phone until the Power menu appears, then tap Power off to turn the phone off.
Wait for a few minutes before pressing the Power button again to turn back on the phone.
- If this doesn’t work, move on to the next step.
11. Force your phone to restart.
If your phone isn’t responding to your Power button or screen taps.
You may be able to force the device to restart.
- Most Android devices can be forced to restart by holding the Power and Volume Up buttons for about ten seconds.
- If Power + Volume Up doesn’t work, try Power + Volume Down.

12. Remove the battery if you can’t force a restart.
If you can’t force your device to restart for some reason, slide the back cover off of your Android, lift out the battery, and then reinsert it and the cover after about ten seconds.
- This step will only work for Androids that have removable batteries.

13. Delete apps that are causing your Android to freeze.
If your phone is freezing whenever you run a certain app—or if you recently installed an app or group of apps—that’s probably a contributor to your phone freezing.
The easiest way to prevent this from continuing is to delete the app(s).
Use the following steps to delete an app:
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Type the name of the app you want to delete in the search bar at the top.
- Tap Uninstall to delete the app.

14. Perform a factory reset if your phone won’t boot up.
If you can’t get your phone to turn on after it was frozen, a factory reset may fix your problems.
Keep in mind that factory resetting your phone will erase all data on the phone.
So make sure that you have a backup before doing so.
- Turn off your phone.
- Hold down the Recovery mode buttons until the recovery screen appears.
- These buttons vary depending on your phone:
- Most Androids – Power and Volume Down
- Samsung – Power, Volume Up, and Home
- Use the Volume Down key to highlight Recovery, then press the Power button to select it.
- Select Wipe data / factory reset and press Power. Select Yes to confirm. Once the format is complete, your phone will be rebooted and you can set it up as if it was new.
