Zee world series: The World Cup is now the biggest one-day cricket tournament, with the latest edition in 2015 attracting a TV audience of nearly 1 billion people.
It’s been staged as an annual event since its second staging in 1979, but wasn’t always so prominent.
In fact, before England and Australia came up with the idea, there had never been a stand-alone international men’s cricket World Cup.
Instead, there had been various versions of rugby football world cups from as early as 1886.
Some of these pre-dated even the first ever FA Cup final!
This article takes you on a brief tour of the history of Cricket World Cups and how they reached their current exalted status.
We take you back through some neglected corners of cricket history to see where it all began…

Zee World Series: A Brief History of the Cricket World Cup
The Cricket World Cup is the pinnacle of men’s cricket. The game’s most famous global event, every four years 32 nations compete to be crowned world champions.
It sounds simple, but it’s an incredibly challenging tournament to win.
To date, only 10 teams have lifted the famous World Cup trophy.
This article takes a brief look at how the World Cup came about and its history so far.
It explains why there are two versions of the Cricket World Cup and when the next one will take place.
What is the Cricket World Cup?
The Cricket World Cup is the pinnacle of men’s cricket. In the game’s most famous global event, every four years 32 nations compete to be crowned world champions.
The first Cricket World Cup took place in England in 1975.
There have been eight tournaments in total, with the ninth to be played in the UK and Ireland from 30 May to 14 July 2019.
The next will be held in Australia from 30 October to 26 November 2020.
The World Cup is one of two major global events for the sport.
The other is the ICC Men’s Test Rankings, which is updated every August.
The top eight teams are awarded the status of full member.
There are ten full members in total, with an eleventh team, the West Indies, having been suspended since 2017.
The ninth team in the Test rankings is awarded associate status, with the tenth team given affiliate status.
Why do we have two versions of the Cricket World Cup?
There are two versions of the Cricket World Cup. These are the ICC Men’s Test Rankings and the Cricket World Cup.
The Men’s Test Rankings are updated every August, while the Cricket World Cup takes place every four years. The two events are linked by a complex points system.
The Test rankings are designed to reflect the relative strength of the teams playing Test cricket.
The Cricket World Cup, on the other hand, is a one-off knock-out tournament.
This means that the teams only play each other once in a single knockout tournament.
To ensure that the two tournaments reflected one another, a complex system of points was devised.
A brief history of the Cricket World Cup
The first Cricket World Cup took place between 11 March and 6 April 1975.
The tournament was hosted by England and played on their home soil.
The competition featured 16 teams and was played using the famous ‘round-robin’ format.
This meant that each team played one another once.

The top two teams from the round-robin stage would then play a semi-final, with the winners of that match then competing in the final. In total, the tournament lasted 28 days.
The West Indies were the first team to lift the Cricket World Cup.
They beat England by 17 runs in the final of what was a truly remarkable tournament.
Despite the fact that it’s the most famous cricket event in the world.
The tournament only received guaranteed funding from the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 1985.
Who has won the Cricket World Cup so far?
England are the current world champions, having beaten New Zealand in a pulsating final at Lord’s. It was their third World Cup win, the first since the tournament was held in the British Isles in 1999. Australia are the most successful team in the history of the Cricket World Cup. They have won the competition on five occasions. India have lifted the trophy twice, while the West Indies have also won the competition twice. Pakistan have won the World Cup once, while Sri Lanka have also lifted the famous trophy once. Other teams to have won the Cricket World Cup include New Zealand (1987), South Africa (2003) and the West Indies (1975).
When will the next Cricket World Cup take place?
The next Cricket World Cup will take place in the United Kingdom and Ireland. This will be the first time that the tournament has been played outside of the Asian sub-continent. The decision to move the tournament from its traditional ground is designed to expand the sport’s appeal globally.
The 10 host venues are The Oval, Edgbaston, Headingley, Lord’s, Old Trafford, Riverside, Sophia Gardens, St James’s Park, Trent Bridge and the Rose Bowl. The tournament will take place between 30 May and 14 July 2019. There are 32 teams in the competition, with the hosts England joined by the top nine teams from the ICC Men’s Test Rankings. The other 23 teams will be decided through a 10-team qualifying tournament, which will take place from 13 March to 5 July 2019.
