River links:When I was growing up, my family would spend summers in the country. My parents love to spend time outside, and they’ve always had a special connection with the natural world. When I visit them now, we frequently go canoeing or tubing – and even though it’s been 10 years since we left New York, it’s still one of our favorite ways to spend a few days out of the year. So when I heard there was going to be a new waterpark in our home state of New York, I knew it was going to be on my list of places to visit while there. One of my best friends lives just outside of Albany, and he loved telling me all about how much fun the park was going to be. “It’s like Disney on Grand Lake!” he said excitedly. “You can do so many things there! You can explore the falls – which is like my favorite part! You can go ice fishing! There’s even a boat ride that takes you through an old sawmill where you can see where the water goes through the hole in the floor. It feels like you’re floating down a river!” This just made my day (and summer)! I realized that when I think about places people should visit while living in New York State, art is usually near the top of the list. After all, it’s home to some great museums and

Grand Central Terminal

River links:While many readers will immediately think of Grand Central Terminal as a place to go for inspiration, I think it’s important to remember that the terminal is also a hub for tourism in New York City. You’ll often see groups of tourists from all over the world visiting the terminal, and it’s a great place to meet people from different cultures. If you’re interested in a certain type of art or just like to learn about different cultures, the terminal is a must-see.

The American Museum of Natural History

Located in Forest Hills, Queens, the American Museum of Natural History is often cited as one of the best museums in the world. The permanent exhibits at the American Museum of Natural History are like a wonderful, fossil-colored dream – and the Zoo animals in the temporary exhibits are even cuter. I loved the exhibit “The Atlantic Slope Deer,” which featured the largest single-cell protein reported to date. The American Museum of Natural History is also home to an amazing educational program for kids that gives them a crash course in the natural world while they learn about different species in North America.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

River links:As one of the top tourist attractions in New York City, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is certainly a must-visit destination. The permanent collection at the Met features masterpieces from all over the world, as well as a large number of important modern and contemporary artworks. I loved the Met’s “Painted Hallway,” which features stunningly painted rooms that are sure to please both art fans and history buffs. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is also home to the world’s largest collection of Hopper paintings, so if that’s your thing, you should definitely check that out too!

Statua della Pace, New York City

River links:Unlike the other destinations on this list, Statua della Pace is located in New York City, so it’s very close to home for many people. The bronze statue was created in 1923 by sculptor Antonio Canova, who dreamed of creating a statue of a woman for half a century. The statue is set in the middle of Central Park and was dedicated in 1927, but it’s most famous for its peaceful presence in the park. Statua della Pace is a great place to start your New York City tour, and it’s also home to New York’s largest public art collection. I loved the “More Than a Sculpture: The Art of Anna Hyatt” exhibit, which was fascinating to learn more about the artist and her statue.

Empire State Building

River links: If you’re looking for a more unique experience than what steamed harbor views provide, the Empire State Building is a must-do. After all, it’s a structure that’s more than 100 years old, and it still functions as a hotel – which is where I spent one of my most memorable summer vacations. The Empire State Building is also home to the world’s highest observation deck, which offers incredible views of New York City and the Hudson River. I loved taking the kids up the tower for their first view of the city from the top, and I would definitely love to return someday with my kids.

Painted Hallway

If you love arts and crafts, Painted Hallway is a must-do in New York State. The permanent exhibit at the Painted Hallway center in Schenectady features hand-painted murals, which take visitors on an enchanting tour of the state’s art history. Painted Hallway is an inspiring and educational experience for all ages, and it’s one of my favorite things to do in Schenectady.

Museum of the American Indian

River links: Although I grew up hearing all the stories about the American Indians, I had no idea what any of them were talking about. I had no idea there were so many different Indian tribes and languages in the U.S., I just knew that they lived in what I was told was “primitive” ways. What I discovered while visiting the Museum of the American Indian in lower Manhattan was that the American Indians had a lot more going on than I ever would have guessed. The American Indian Museum is home to a world-renowned collection of Native American art, as well as a huge number of fascinating exhibits about different tribes and cultures.

The High Falls Trail in Oswego County

The High Falls Trail in Oswego County is a strenuous 10-mile hike that starts and finishes in Oswego, and it’s definitely worth the effort. The trail features some of the most impressive waterfalls in the entire state, and the views from the top are simply breath-taking. The trail was once used for logging and mining, but now it’s a beautiful bike and hiking trail. The trail is also home to an amazing number of wildlife, including deer, fox, raccoons, and opossum. If you love nature and you’re looking for an unforgettable experience, the High Falls Trail in Oswego County is the hike for you.
