1. Know more about the job

Domestic Medical assistants provide physician support services that ensure that healthcare facilities run smoothly. They are responsible for administrative as well as clinical tasks, such as maintaining patient records, preparing patients and rooms for examination, assisting physicians with exams, and performing front-desk tasks. Medical assistants typically work in physician’s offices, hospitals, and other healthcare facilities.

9. Get your GED or its equivalent.

The only real qualification for the job is that you have a high-school diploma or its equivalent. If you haven’t already completed your high-school education, enlist in GED training course and eventually take the GED, a competency test that measures the skills you were supposed to learn in high school.

10. Find a doctor to train you as a Medical Assistant.

Given that there are no legal requirements to becoming a Medical Assistant, this is the easiest, cheapest and fastest way.

12. Attend a school to receive a degree as a medical assistant.

Getting a degree from a school will confer prestige and help your chances of getting hired. If you do decide to go to school for a medical assisting program, you can take either of the following tracks:

  • Medical Assistant Associate Degree. This takes about 2 years for most applicants to complete.

13. Get certified (optional).

You don’t need to be certified as a medical assistant in order to find a job as one, but it really helps. Some jobs may require certification. You will need to choose a certification provider that is nationally accredited by the NCCA.

18. How much is the medical assistant program?

This varies from city to city and state to state. Whatever program you enroll in, be sure to verify they are indeed accredited. You can often contact your local community college for the answer. Enrolling in community college has several benefits, such as the availability of federal funds (AKA financial aid). This means you get paid to get your education! Keep your grades above a 2.0 (C average) to maintain your financial aid status.

  • Make sure to ensure that the school you attend is preparing you to sit for a nationally accredited certification exam (ex. AAMA, AMT, NHA, NCCT).
